Recovery Period After Breast Augmentation Surgery

After breast augmentation surgery, the patient does not feel pain after waking up from anesthesia and can usually feel a slight tension. Breast augmentation can be observed and felt immediately after surgery. The hospital stay is usually one day.  However, if the operation is performed in the morning, the patient can be discharged on the same day.

In order to put the necessary pressure on the breasts on the patient’s chest, a special plaster and a strongly wrapped bandage are applied.

In the surgery, a vacuum system called a drain can be placed in order to prevent possible complications by removing the slight leaks that may occur in the pocket where the prosthesis is placed.  These drains are usually removed within a few days.

Post-operative pain can be easily controlled with simple painkillers and decreases considerably in a day or two. The cause of the pain felt is not due to the incision or stitches on the skin. The tension created by the breast prosthesis applied to the patient on the surrounding tissues causes pain.  When the breast prosthesis is placed under the breast tissue, the pain is less felt after the surgery, but if it is placed under the muscle, a significant pain can be felt, especially in the first 4 days.  After the operation, the feeling of fatigue in the patient returns to normal in 24-48 hours.

Regular use of antibiotics for 7 days is recommended to prevent post-operative infection.

Approximately 3-4 days later, the dressing around the breast is opened and the drains, if any, are removed. Only a small plaster is applied on the incision. Then, a compression sports bra is worn according to the breast size. This bra must be used as recommended by the physician. The patient can return to her social life within 5-7 days.  The patient should start applying the massages recommended by the physician. However, it should not be forgotten that excessive massage applications will also be harmful. For this reason, breast massage should be applied correctly as recommended by the physician. After 5-7 days, the patient shows improvement in all kinds of activities provided that it is not tiring and challenging. 2 weeks after the breast augmentation operation, an activity such as light walking and at the end of the 4th week, light jogging can be performed. At the end of the 8th weekend, heavy sports such as fitness and swimming can be started.

As the edema resolves during the breast recovery period, an asymmetrical appearance is achieved. The breasts, which initially do not look very natural due to edema, will heal over time and gain a beautiful appearance. In the first 2 months after the operation, the breasts appear 30% larger than they should be. It is expected that the estimated breast will gain its full proportion at the end of the 6th month.
